March 31 marks International Transgender Day of Visibility. The rising amount of suicides in transgender youth and the ongoing violence, particularly against trans women of colour, are what make this day so important. The suicide of seventeen-year-old American transgender girl Leelah Alcorn was one of the key moments that began a public discussion on the visibility of transgender people. The success of trans actress Laverne Cox and trans model Lea T show how, with time, the transgender community is gradually gaining visibility.
